MAASAI VILLAGES INĀ NGORONGORO

OVERVIEW

The region of Ngorongoro was once home to the Dorobo, a group of hunter-gatherers who migrated from the Lower Nile. However, they were later subordinated to the Maasai, who arrived in the area about 200 years ago. The Maasai gradually displaced the Barbaig, forcing them to move to the border of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area near Lake Eyasi, and became the only ethnic group in the area.

When the Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established in 1959, it was designated as a nature reserve with the aim of preserving the rights of the indigenous people and promoting tourism. It is the only place in Tanzania where people are allowed to inhabit a protected area.

DETAILED ITINERARY

In the morning, you will embark on a scenic drive to Ngorongoro, where you will have the incredible opportunity to visit a Maasai village. Upon arrival, you will be greeted in the traditional way, with an abundance of singing and dancing. Don't hesitate to join in on the festivities, as participation is highly encouraged! You'll also have the chance to learn about their customs and practices, such as fire-making and beadwork. If you're curious about their way of life, you can even visit their homes and engage in conversations with the locals. Your guide will be on hand to interpret if necessary, so feel free to ask questions. However, please be aware that the houses can be quite smoky if fires are lit indoors. While you're there, you can also support the local economy by purchasing handmade leather and beadwork from the villagers. Alternatively, these items can also be found in the camp shop. After the activities, you'll continue with your game drive in the crater floor before departing for your onward journey. This exciting excursion will last approximately 1-1.5 hours, taking place in the beautiful Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
