Kilimanjaro Climb Via Machame Route 9 Days
The Machame Route, also known as the Whiskey route, is a highly sought-after camping trek that provides stunning views of landscapes like Mt. Meru, Pare Mountains, Lake Chala, and Lake Jipe. While completing the climb in six days is feasible, opting for the seven-day itinerary with an additional day for acclimatization and rest before the summit day is highly recommended. This will decrease the risk of altitude sickness and increase your likelihood of reaching the summit.
Day 1: Moshi Arrival
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your guide will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha. You will have a briefing about your climb and meet your climbing team. Dinner and overnight at Gran Melia Arusha the hotel.
Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast, you will be driven to Machame Gate (1,640m) to register with the park authorities. You will then start your climb through the rainforest to Machame Camp (2,835m). This hike takes about 6-7 hours and you will have lunch en route. Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp.
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Following breakfast, you will climb up a steep ridge, which offers a stunning view of the Shira Plateau. The hike takes around 4-6 hours, with lunch on the way. You will arrive at Shira Camp (3,750m) in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.
Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
After breakfast, you will climb to Lava Tower (4,600m) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950m). This hike takes about 6-7 hours and you will have lunch at Lava Tower. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you will climb the Barranco Wall, a steep cliff that requires scrambling. Then, you will traverse the southern circuit to Karanga Camp (3,995m). This hike takes approximately 4-5 hours and you will have lunch at Karanga Camp. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Following breakfast, you will climb to Barafu Camp (4,673m), which is the last camp before the summit. This hike takes approximately 4-5 hours and you will have lunch at Barafu Camp. In the afternoon, you will have a briefing about the summit attempt. Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
You will start your climb at midnight to reach the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise. The hike takes about 7-8 hours, with a short break at Stella Point (5,739m). After reaching the summit, you will descend to Mweka Camp (3,068m) for a well-deserved rest. The descent takes approximately 5-6 hours. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
After breakfast, you will descend to Mweka Gate (1,640m) and receive your summit certificates. Then, you will be driven back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and celebration. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 9: Departure
Following breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home or next adventure.
