The long rainy season runs from late March to May, a short rainy season in November to December, and the rest of the year is dry and sunny. Pack a sun hat, sun cream, long and short pants, light cotton clothing that covers your body, insect and mosquito repellent, warm clothing for the evenings, a light sweater and trousers, and a fleece and rain jacket for the rainy season. When in the bush, wear colorless clothing that provides camouflage, and bring gloves when climbing Kilimanjaro to protect your hands from sharp rocks.

MEDICAL ITEMS AND VACCINES

For African travel, routine vaccines include protection against chickenpox, measles, polio, influenza, diphtheria, mumps, rubella, pertussis, and tetanus. A booster-shot for meningitis or rabies is also advisable, and we recommend consulting a travel medicine clinic or personal doctor for medical advice specific to East Africa. Consult your doctor on the appropriate anti-malaria medicine for you as there are currently no vaccines available, but protection against malaria is necessary when traveling in the wild.

ELECTRONIC ITEMS AND TECHNOLOGIES

Local sim cards can be purchased for as little as $2, providing access to internet, local calls, text messages, and international calls.  Most accommodations and coffee shops in Tanzania offer Wi-Fi. But when in safari please be aware that the communication infrastructure can be limited.

Regarding electricity, blackouts are rarely there but most accommodation options do have backup power. It’s advisable to bring a UK adapter for your power plugs. To capture your memories in Africa, consider bringing a camera with film or memory cards, as well as USB devices for transferring data.

Banks, ATMs, and exchange bureaus are available in all major towns and cities. Please authorize your bank or credit card to accept withdrawals abroad and be aware that a small fee will be charged to your accounts for withdrawing money, depending on your bank.

The recommended tip for your safari guide is $20 to $30 per day per group, and $10 per day for the driver.
