Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park – Game Drive & Overnight in Mto wa Mbu
Your journey begins with a morning pick-up in Arusha, followed by a drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its ancient baobab trees and dense elephant population. As you explore the park on game drives, you’ll likely spot giraffes, wildebeest, lions, and perhaps even leopards near the Tarangire River. After a picnic lunch inside the park, you’ll exit in the afternoon and drive to Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant town nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Here, you’ll settle into a lodge or camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Cultural Tour in Mto wa Mbu – Drive to Lake Natron
After breakfast, enjoy a guided cultural tour of Mto wa Mbu, one of Tanzania’s most diverse communities, home to over 120 tribes. Walk through banana plantations, local markets, and artisan workshops, tasting local food and learning about rural life. By late morning, begin your dramatic journey north toward Lake Natron, driving through the arid landscape of the Engaruka Basin and past extinct volcanoes such as Gelai and Kitumbene. Arrive at your lodge or camp near Engaresero village, nestled beneath the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred “Mountain of God” to the Maasai. If time allows, take a walk to nearby waterfalls or simply relax by the river.
Day 3: Lake Natron Exploration – Drive to Ngorongoro Highlands
Start the day early with a walk to the shores of Lake Natron, famous for its haunting beauty and as a major breeding ground for flamingos. The landscape here is otherworldly, with steaming hot springs, crusted salt flats, and dramatic escarpments. After breakfast, depart the Natron area and begin your ascent back into the Ngorongoro Highlands, climbing steadily from the Rift Valley floor. Enjoy scenic views and cultural encounters along the way as you travel through Maasai lands. Arrive in the late afternoon at a lodge in the Ngorongoro area or nearby Karatu town for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Tour – Return to Karatu
After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a massive volcanic caldera and one of the most game-rich regions in Africa. Spend the day exploring this unique ecosystem, home to lions, elephants, hippos, flamingos, and the rare black rhino. With its mix of lakes, swamps, forests, and savannah, the crater offers an unmatched variety of habitats. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, then continue your exploration before ascending in the late afternoon. Return to Karatu for dinner and overnight, surrounded by coffee plantations and rolling hills.
Day 5: Karatu to Lake Eyasi – Hadzabe & Datoga Cultural Visit
Depart after breakfast for Lake Eyasi, located southwest of Ngorongoro. This off-the-beaten-path region offers an incredible cultural experience with some of Tanzania’s last remaining indigenous tribes. Upon arrival, you’ll visit the Hadzabe bushmen, who live as hunter-gatherers. Join them on a morning hunting expedition and learn about their survival skills. Later, meet the Datoga tribe, traditional pastoralists and skilled blacksmiths who forge tools using ancient techniques. Spend the evening at a peaceful lodge near the lake.
Day 6: Lake Eyasi – Return to Arusha
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast with views of the Rift Valley before beginning your return drive to Arusha. En route, you’ll pass through fertile highlands, rural towns, and Maasai steppe landscapes. Depending on your schedule, you may stop at a curio shop or local market for souvenirs. Arrive in Arusha by late afternoon, where your safari ends with a drop-off at your hotel or airport.
